Library
The library contains 6.000 volumes mainly of old and rare publications, many of which date back to the beginning of the 18th century.
It is continually enriched with new publications: history books and archives material mainly, but also literature, reviews, journals, etc.
HYDRA MUSEUM HISTORICAL ARCHIVES - RULES OF OPERATION OF THE PUBLIC READING ROOM
1. The access to the NGA archives is free of charge and is based on the terms and conditions of Law N. 1946/91.
2. To study the archives material and library publications, the readers must first fill in manually an "APPLICATION - STATEMENT" provided by IAMY. Researchers must, in addition to the application, fill in a triplicate form of detailed description of the material for each folder, box, manuscript, code or other exhibit they wish to study. These applications must be clear and specify with accuracy the requested material.
3. The application is either approved by the competent reading room employee or submitted for approval to the Management.
4. All applications for archives material or books shall be rejected by the competent reading room employee if the applicant has in the past caused damaged to the archives material or if the requested material is too worn out and access to it is withheld by the Service until its rehabilitation.
5. In exceptional cases and at its discretion IAMY management is entitled to forward the relevant request to the NGA conservancy.
6. The competent IAMY employee is entitled to request the researchers for additional recommendations.
7. The consultation of both the archives material and library publications takes place exclusively at the IAMY public reading room. Opening Hours: Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 15.00.
8. Researchers may call the library to get information about the availability of the material they wish to consult. IAMY undertakes to make available non voluminous requests (i.e. requests for single folders) on the same day or on the day following the application as long as there are no other requests pending.
As regards folders containing unbound, non-numbered and non-stamped documents, IAMY shall deliver them for consultation only after having prepared them and within a reasonable time depending on the quantity of documents the folder includes.
9. Researchers are invited to use the IAMY inventories, lists and logs to look for the material they are interested in (archives material – books) and to fill in with accuracy their consultation applications.
10. Responsible to deliver the material for consultation is the competent reading room employee. Access to storage areas is prohibited to the public.
Before leaving the reading room area, readers are invited to return the material accompanied by the second sheet of the triplicate form to the competent employee who is responsible to discharge them of any obligation.
11. Researchers are invited to comply with IAMY personnel recommendations regarding archives material handling and care.
Researchers are invited to leave their attache cases at the specified area upon entrance to the reading room and throughout their stay in it.
12. Due to the uniqueness and sensitivity of the material provided for consultation, readers must handle it with care and are requested to avoid disrupting the order of loose documents.
13. As regards extremely sensitive material or for safety reasons, IAMY competent authorities are entitled to replace the original documents with copies in microfilm, photocopy or photograph form. IAMY competent authorities are entitled to decide at their discretion and at any moment to replace the original documents with copies if they judge that the frequency of consultation or the use made of them are endangering their preservation.
14. Photocopies of archives material are made available, on demand and if the relevant application is approved, exclusively for material suitable for photocopying, at the Service's discretion and upon payment of the relevant sum.
IAMY personnel undertake to photocopy the archives material. As regards documents whose condition does not allow photocopying, researchers may at their own charge and with the competent employee's approval photograph them. Requests for mass reproduction of sets or collections must be approved by the NGA conservancy.
